    Oriental Carpets and Their Symbolism

Oriental carpets have a long history and are known for their intricate designs and symbolism. These carpets are often hand-woven using traditional techniques and materials, making them valuable cultural and artistic artefacts.

One of the most prevalent motifs found in oriental carpets is the swastika, which symbolises good fortune. The swastika motif can be found on carpets from America, Europe, China, and India. It’s also interesting to note that the term “swasti” in Sanskrit means well-being.

The borders of oriental rugs are considered magical, and they protect those who sit within them. Allegedly, some carpet designs can even affect your brain. Some of the most common border motifs include the wave border, which symbolises water, and the crab border, which symbolises the zodiac sign of cancer.

Other prevalent motifs in oriental carpets include the tree of life, symbolising the connection between the world and paradise. The “shou and fu” is a symbol that represents long life and good luck. The sky door leading to Heaven is a reminder that Allah preaches high standards of cleanliness. Lastly, the palmettes are floral motifs that symbolise paradise.

The Hidden Germs in Your Carpet

Carpets can harbour a lot of hidden germs that can be harmful to your health. According to American scientists, more than 43 million tons of dust fall over the United States every year, reflecting the indoor air quality, which usually contains about twice as much dust as the outdoor air.

In approximately one ounce of carpet dust, there can be about 2,000 dust mites. When the carpets are not properly cleaned and maintained, it can exacerbate allergies, which can lead to respiratory issues.

The carcinogens in cigarettes can accumulate on the carpet, posing a risk to children and pets who spend a lot of time on the floor. Carpets are also a favourite place for mature fleas to live in. They thrive in drier areas like carpets, and their eggs prefer wetter spots like water-damaged carpets. Additionally, a damp carpet could become a breeding ground for Stachybotrys atra (black mould), which produces mycotoxins that are responsible for dermatitis, immunosuppression, and mucosal irritation.

It’s recommended to clean your carpets at least once a year to a year and a half to improve the quality of air in your home and prevent the spread of harmful germs. Professional carpet cleaning services are recommended to avoid using inappropriate cleaning products that may cause illnesses.

The Evolution of Carpet Cleaning Technology

The evolution of carpet cleaning technology has come a long way since the invention of the first carpet sweeper in 1876. Today, vacuum cleaners are the most popular cleaning tool for carpets, with a wide range of models and features available to choose from.

In the early days, carpet sweepers were used to clean carpets, and the popular term for cleaning carpets was “bisselling.” The first carpet sweeper with a central brush and rubber wheels was patented by Melville Reuben Bissell in 1876.

Although the first carpet sweeper’s inventor is still shrouded in mystery, it’s believed to be Daniel Hess. The first motorised vacuum cleaner was invented in 1901. It was large, powered by coal, and required three people to operate it. Another early version of the vacuum cleaner was installed in the house cellar, connected to a pipe network leading to each room. Another vacuum cleaner type had to be parked outside of the house. The model was with long hoses that had to go through the windows to access the room. An essential problem in those days was that vacuum cleaners were very hard to sell because most potential clients didn’t believe they could have that much dirt in their carpets.

Today, vacuum cleaners come in different shapes and sizes, with different features such as cordless, bagless, and even robot cleaners. Some are equipped with HEPA filters, which are essential in keeping the air clean and healthy. The latest models also come with advanced technology, such as cyclonic suction, brush roll controls, and smart sensors that detect dirt.

The Five-Second Rule and Carpet Facts

The five-second rule is a popular belief that food dropped on the floor will be bacteria-free if it’s picked up within five seconds of being dropped. Unfortunately, this is just a myth. Bacteria can live on carpets for more than four weeks, and they are immediately transferred to the food through a process called bacterial adhesion. On top of that, there are a lot of pests that can find a home beneath your carpet pile.

According to the American Floor Covering Industry, the difference between a rug and a carpet is only a matter of size. If it’s bigger than 40 square feet, it’s considered a carpet. If it’s smaller, it’s a rug. So, technically, the “magic carpet” or “flying carpet” is a rug.

How to Maintain Your Carpet’s Long Life

Your carpets are not only part of your decoration but also part of your well-being and health. Therefore, it’s essential to maintain them properly. Here are some tips to help you maintain your carpet’s long life:

    • Vacuum your carpets regularly to prevent the accumulation of dirt and dust.
    • Use a professional carpet cleaning service at least once a year to a year and a half to remove hidden germs, allergens, and pollutants.
    • Do not let stains set – clean up spills right away.
    • Doormats placed at entrances may greatly cut down on the quantity of dirt and debris tracked inside.
    • Rotate your furniture regularly to prevent traffic patterns from developing and wearing out your carpets unevenly.

    Final words

Carpets are an essential part of our homes, providing warmth, comfort, and decoration. However, they can also harbour harmful germs and pollutants that can affect our health. It’s essential to maintain our carpets properly by vacuuming them regularly, cleaning spills immediately, and using professional cleaning services. With proper maintenance, your carpets can last for many years while keeping your home clean and healthy.
