When it comes to buying frames for your photos and artwork it can be confusing especially with the endless options available online and in the shops.
If you’re starting to plan your perfect statement gallery wall, or just want to jazz up your bedroom with some new prints, here are our tips on selecting the best frames to add those finishing touches to your home without feeling overwhelmed with options!
The first step to finding the perfect frame is styling. Think about the inspiration for your room, if you have a Scandinavian theme running through your home then a light wooden frame would work the best however if you like the industrial look, opting for a sleek black frame would accentuate your space.
The standard frame sizing runs alongside popular printing sizes, so finding your frame should be simple. When measuring a frame it’s important the measurements are calculated using the height and width from the inside of the frame, not the outside border. Matting is used to give a polished, professional look to your prints, if using a frame with matting, ensure that you take this into consideration otherwise the matting will cut off areas of the design or image. Matting that comes with a frame will usually measure around 1 inch wide.
To add a pop of colour to your room with a stand-out print then you may be looking for a frame for an A3 print. The most common frame for this would be 30x42cm. In terms of styling, most prints look great without a border however if you are considering adding a border just bare this in mind when buying your frame.
If you’re framing your favourite photos then you will most likely be looking for a frame to fit standard 35mm photography. These photographs fit a variety of smaller frames depending on the way you style them. The most common frame choice for these kinds of images is 6×4 however to add a border for a sleek look go for a 6×8 or 8×10. These sized frames are also perfect to slot into smaller spaces on gallery walls!
If you’re printing a portrait or want to enlarge a family image to sit proudly on your fireplace then you will most likely be looking for a frame to fit an 8×10 print. You can find a selection of 8×10 frames, however for a border, we recommend going for a 12×14.
To add some character to a room, why not decorate it with smaller posters? To do this you will be looking for frames that are 16×20 or if adding a border for a simplistic look try a 20×24.
There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to frame sizes so make sure you measure your print, decide on the styling (border or no border?) and have a space in mind! (Remember, you could always map out a space on the wall with tape for a size guide if this helps too!)
